Parker McCollum Co-Hosts 8/1-2

The co-host this wknd is Parker McCollum, who just won the ACM Album of the Year award. His latest single is Killin’ Me.  He’s at his home in Texas, awaiting the birth of his second son. Parker says he’s due “any day now.”  In fact he says he’s likely to arrive by the time this show airs.  Wednesday night, Parker announced that he is canceling his shows this weekend because of the baby’s arrival.

Lon asked how he’s preparing for baby #2: “My preparation for having another child is being on the road. When I’m home, it’s being outside making sure the yard looks good, taking care of that grass.  When your wife’s super-pregnant, your best interest is to stay out of the way.”

Have you noticed a difference with the second one? “I feel like we’re more relaxed. We know what to expect. It’s been two years since we did the newborn thing. But at least now we know we can do it. But little kids are wild. The one we have now probably belongs in a zoo. I can’t imagine what another one will be like. But it’s all so good.”

Names? “We were making a list this morning. Some think we’re keeping a secret, but we have no secret to keep. We don’t have it nailed down yet.”

Major turns 2 next week.  How’s he doing? “He will climb on top of the house if you don’t watch him. He’s walking, he’s running, he’s throwing, he smokes a golf ball. Anything to do with a ball or a tractor. He just wants to go all the time. He’s all boy.  He’s telling me ‘no,’ and that’s not gonna last. That’s not gonna get him far. He doesn’t understand that yet. It’s the wildest thing I’ve seen in my life.”

What are you doing for Major’s second birthday? “I have a show that day, and we’re gonna do his party on another day.  But I’ll fly home as soon as I walk off stage.  Luckily he’s only 2, so he’ll never know that dad was late to his birthday.”

Parker won the ACM Album of the Year award in May.  Lon asked if he’s heard from any of his heroes.  “I talked to George Strait.  It was his birthday, so I texted him happy birthday. He hit me back with congrats on the award.  That was cool for him to even be aware of what happened.  I also heard from Patrick Mahomes, CJ Stroud, and Peyton Manning.  I don’t know if any of them were as cool as George Strait saying congrats on your album of the year award,”

Parker has been touring all year with Vincent Mason.  So when he saw Stella Lefty in the Top 10, he said “They were sitting together close to us at the ACMs, so I got to meet her.  They seem like they’ve been together for ten years.  They seem happy together, and she seems like such a nice woman, and he’s a stud of a young man, so I think they go together well.”
