Cody Johnson Returns 5/9-10

This week, Cody Johnson returns for a second week as Lon’s co-host. He’s nominated for four ACM Awards including Entertainer of the Year. His current Top 5 “The Fall” is nominated for Single & Video of the Year. Cody talks about making the dramatic video. He also gives a sneak peak at a song from his new album.

Lon began the show by asking Cody how he felt about the ACM Awards returning to Las Vegas: “I’m very excited. I’m a Texas guy, and I love having things in Texas.  But there’s something about having the ACMs in Vegas.  It’s like going the National Finals Rodeo in Vegas.  We all go to Vegas to cut loose and enjoy what Las Vegas is.”

He then asked Cody what it would mean to be named Entertainer: “You know my history of being the guy who came to Nashville and was told he was too country.  So when you persevere though that, and become accepted by the industry, any nomination is a victory. For me, Entertainer of the Year, that’s the gold buckle.  I’ve dreamed about winning that since I was a little kid.”

The video for Cody’s hit The Fall is nominated for Visual Media, and it’s also very special because it stars 5-time bull fighter of the year Cody Webster: “Everyone would think it would be about the bull rider because of my history.  But to make it about the bull fighter, they’re the ones who get beat up the most.  For them, you have to believe the ride is worth the fall.”

One of the dramatic aspects of the video is it was shot with Cody & his band playing in the rain: “I loved the idea.  It was like Garth Brooks in the 90s.  It was a torrential downpour. It looked beautiful, but it was ice cold.  It was miserable.  But again, the ride was worth the fall.”

Cody’s new album “Banks of the Trinity” will be released on June 26th.  The next day, he will be one of the performers at Alan Jackson’s Last Call concert in Nashville: “I’m extremely excited about that.  That was a very quick yes.  That night will go down in country music history.  I already know which Alan song I’m doing with him, but I don’t want to give it away. I think it’s the last one you’d expect me to do.
