Eric: Fatherhood is Like Combat

| January 7, 2012

On October 3rd, Eric Church’s life changed.  That was the day he and his wife Catherine welcomed their first child, a son they named Boone McCoy Church.  Eric arrived at the Country Countdown USA studios looking pretty tired, and he told Lon Helton, “We’re not sleeping a whole lot.  I’m draggin’ pretty bad.  He’s just not sleeping when we should be sleeping.  We need to get our schedule co-ordinated with him.  He’ll sleep during the day and at night it’s rock & roll.  Somebody asked me what the first few weeks was like, and I said it’s been like combat!  He’s doing better now.  But trying to survive, changing diapers, it was exhaustion, but a great exhaustion.  We’re having fun now, he’s starting to recognize us.”

Explain the name: “Boone is from my side of the family, and McCoy is from Catherine’s side of the family.  What’s funny was deciding the order.  Catherine had a Caesarian section, and they gave her good drugs.  So I wanted Boone McCoy, so I took advantage of the situation and won that.”

What have you noticed about him? “I can’t believe how fast they grow and change.  I remember being gone for a couple days on the road, and couldn’t believe the changes.  He’s growing, she’s breast feeding, so he’s all butterfat right now.”
