Thomas Rhett Co-Hosts 4/4-4/5
The co-host this wknd is Thomas Rhett, who is in our Top 5 with Ain’t A Bad Life, joined by Jordan Davis. Thomas co-hosts the show while on paternity leave! He & his wife just had their 5th child, and first boy, named Brave Elijah. Lots of conversation about the new baby.
Thomas told Lon: “It’s surreal. I thought after our 4th girl, it wasn’t in the cards for me to have a boy. When we were in the hospital, I thought it was gonna be another girl. Having that surprise was one of the coolest moments in my life. He’s a big baby, he was ten pounds, my wife is a super-hero. He’s got a bunch of built in big sister babysitters. It’s been a blast.”
Lon started by asking when they found out they were expecting? “Last January, we were actually planning to go to Uganda again for a whole year. We were starting the adoption process again. Then I came home father’s day weekend, and my father’s day gift was a positive pregnancy test. We had tried for a while to get pregnant one more time, and here we are with our first baby boy.”
Lon asked about the name Brave Elijah: “We procrastinated on the name. We were drinking wine, and the name of the wine was Mount Brave. So I asked Lauren about the name Brave for a boy. We loved what that word meant for a boy or girl. But we couldn’t come up with a middle name. We were in the hospital, they gave us the birth certificate, and we still didn’t have a middle name. I was reading Elijah’s story in the Bible, and he led an incredible life. So we settled on Brave Elijah.”
Are you stopping at five? “That’s always been Lauren’s magic number of kids. I don’t think we’re gonna have any more kids. But it was the coolest thing in the world not to know if it was a boy or girl. I have never been more surprised. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but so worth it.”
Lon asked about new music: “We’re going in the studio next week to start working on our next record, and hopefully have a song or two come out between April & May. Hopefully a record by the end of this year. I’ve been writing for a year & a half for this project. I feel the word on this next project is timeless. I’m thinking on making a short record, only ten songs, and let’s go with that.”
Thomas will play London this summer with Luke Combs. Lon asked if they’ve talked about that show: “I was at Luke’s house for his birthday party. Getting to celebrate him, I felt I got to know him better, That makes me more excited for London. Hopefully we can play some golf, and drink some pints of Guinness in a pub somewhere. And getting to watch him headline for 90,000 people three nights in a row in a foreign country is insanity.”
When we got to Ella Langley’s song, Thomas had this story: “I was at my mom’s house last week. My grandmother is a huge Ella fan. She asked me what Ella meant by a line in Choosin’ Texas. I said, ‘Let’s facetime her and ask her.’ So we called and she answered. She was about to go on stage opening for Eric Church. I told her my grandma has a question. Ella was so gracious to walk my grandma through the opening verse of Choosin’ Texas.”
Thomas also has great stories this week about Blake Shelton, Tucker Wetmore, Justin Moore, Morgan Wallen, and Russell Dickerson.
NEXT WEEK: Dylan Scott
