Jake Owen Co-Hosts 6/10-11

This week’s co-host is Jake Owen, who has just released a new single: “On The Boat Again.” It’s from a new album, Loose Cannon, available June 23rd. Jake recently played in a golf tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus. He also played the annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Lots of music & golf this week.

Jake recently took part in the Memorial Golden Bear Pro-Am in Ohio.  That tournament is hosted by golf legend Jack Nicklaus.  So Lon asked Jake if he met Jack: “Yes I did. I got to shake his hand.  That was pretty special. That’s the greatest golfer to ever hit a golf ball.”  

Jake’s new single, “On The Boat Again:” “Great timing right now, with everybody back in the water on their boats. I saw a lot of posts this week of people on the water playing that song.  I’ve always been a boat guy growing up, and I’ve always loved Willie Nelson. So marrying two great things, it felt good to get that song and I knew immediately I was going to record it.”

One song on Jake’s new album is there thanks to Luke Bryan.  Jake explained: “Someone sent me a song, called Solo, Solo. I heard it and thought it was perfect for my record.  I called them back and said I wanted to record it, and they told me Luke Bryan already asked for it.  So I called Luke, and Luke immediately hit me back, and said, ‘Jake man, I love that song, I don’t know if I’m gonna record it, but tell you what, go record that song.’ So I did, and I just played it for him, and he was smiling. So I gotta give credit to Luke for giving it to me.”

Earlier this year, Jake played golf at the annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am.  While there, he spoke with Eric Church: “This was his first year playing there.  I talked to him, you could tell he was trying to measure the vibe. He’s a good golfer, he’s got a good swing. He looked like he had a good time. he was smoking a cigar the whole time, wearing the sunglasses, he was in Eric Church mode.”

Jake remembered a story about Luke Combs: “Years ago, I saw Luke & his manager walking on Broadway, and I gave them a ride to Music Row.  Luke left a can of dip in my cup holder.  I should have kept that can of dip in my truck. It would probably be worth something now.  Any time someone is filling stadiums, it’s incredible.”

Jake told Lon he’s picked up a new hobby: Photography.  He says he brings his camera with him everywhere he goes: “I’m taking your photo right now! I’m going to do a photo book.  That’s something I should have done sooner.  I think I can fill a nice coffee table book.  I’ll send you a copy when it’s done.”
