Josh Turner Duets With A Hero

| August 4, 2012

Josh Turner has already done duets with several of his musical idols, including Randy Travis, Ralph Stanley, and John Anderson.  When it came time to pick a legend for his new “Punching Bag” CD, he chose bluegrass star Ricky Skaggs.  He explained the decision to Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “I had written a song, ‘For The Love of God,’  and the song came from that phrase that you hear people say, that usually has a negative connotation.  I’ve always tried to take an everyday phrase and use it in a song because if people can say it, they can relate to it.  But I wanted to put a positive twist on it. So that’s what I did.  I went back to my musical roots of traditional country, wanted to make it as fast as I could, and was pleased with the way the song came out.  Listening to it, it made me think of the album Ricky Skaggs did called ‘Solo,’ in which Ricky played every instrument.  But the instruments Ricky played were obscure but sounded cool, so I wanted Ricky to come in and play some of those instruments on this song.  So he came in with a couple of mandolins and a cello/banjo, so he played those instruments and sang harmony, and it was a dream come true to have him on this song.”
