Toby & Willie At CMT Awards

| July 1, 2012

Toby Keith & Kristen Bell co-hosted the 2012 CMT Music Awards last month.  In addition to performing his own hit, “Beers Ago,” Toby joined country legend Willie Nelson for “Roll Me Up & Smoke Me When I Die.”  The show marked a reunion for Toby & Willie, who had a #1 in 2004 with “Beer For My Horses.”  Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton asked Toby about Willie: “You know what’s funny, those skits we did on the CMT Awards, were based on the Beer For My Horses movie. He’ll walk out of his dressing room looking like the promo from the Rocky movie.  The thing about Willie, he’ll call me every four to eight weeks.  He loves to tell jokes.  If you read that book, The Tao of Willie, it’s funny stores from the road, but every few pages he drops his latest joke on you.  He just loves great jokes, so we tell a lot of jokes.  Mostly it’s the same chitter chatter.”

How about writing songs with Willie? “I actually gave him a title.  He’s always got a guitar out and says, ‘Let’s write,’ but his bus fills up quickly.  He doesn’t have a filter.  So if you get in there and try to write, you’ll have 20 co-writers before you know it.  But I gave him a title, and we’ll see if he writes it, and I’ll come back and tell you about it.”
