Joe Don Rooney’s First Opry

Back in October, Rascal Flatts became the newest members of the Grand Ole Opry.  But guitar player Joe Don Rooney actually played on another Opry stage when he was a teen.  Last week, when Thompson Square was on Country Countdown USA, Keifer Thompson said he sang with Joe Don at the Grand Lake Opry in Grove Oklahoma.  “That’s true!  That’s when I got my start.  I was 15 years old.  And I met Keith Thompson at the time, and he’s a great guy.   But what was cool about the Grand Lakes Opry is that once a month, Opry members from Nashville would come to town.  So I met Jeannie Sealy and Connie Smith came to town.  Now I’m a real Opry member.  That’s a cool story.  We had our own Opry thing going.”
