Toby Praises Red Solo Cups
Toby Keith released a video for a song called “Red Solo Cup.” It’s included in his new CD, “Clancy’s Tavern.” It’s the only song on the album he didn’t write. Toby told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “This song was sent to me, and they said, ‘You’re not gonna believe it.’ So I heard it, and I had it in my head for two days. It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. So I played it for a friend of mine, and they said, ‘That’s awesome.’ I said, ‘You think it’s stupid?’ ‘Yeah but it’s clever and funny. It’s stupid but it’s good stupid.’ We get in the studio and I’m doing the vocal on it, and the President of my label comes in and says, ‘I can’t believe you cut that stupid song.’ The next day, he tells me, ‘I had to take an Ambien at 4 in the morning to go to sleep because I had the stupid song in my head.’ So everybody we play it for falls out. As soon as I put it on hold, lots of other artists wanted it, but the writers said “Toby’s got it first.”

Over the summer, Toby put together an all-star video for “Red Solo Cup.” He told Lon, “We got all my celebrity friends, from Carrot Top, Larry Bird, Roger Clemens, Lance Burton, Craig Ferguson, all sorts of people that sent in 10 second videos of people doing something crazy with red solo cups.” Lon then asked, Were there some things that you couldn’t use? Toby said, “Carrot Top turned in some stuff that’s illegal I think. I don’t know where to draw the line on what’s too strong for public consumption, but Carrot Top went outside the box. I was diggin’ it, but there’s no way that it’ll be seen anywhere.”
