Luke Combs Returns 3/11-12
Luke Combs returns for a second week as Lon’s co-hosts, with more about his new album Gettin’ Old and his 2023 World Tour, plus more about his 8-month-old son Tex. Luke also reveals a new song he wrote for Gabby Barrett, and his experience performing at this year’s Grammy Awards.
Luke & his wife Nicole became parents 8 months ago. Luke says Tex is just starting to move, and is close to crawling. “I’m looking forward to talk to him for the first time. I can’t imagine having a conversation with your child. beyond ‘I want food.’ You’re in this phase where you’re responsible to keep this person alive literally.”
Luke is a big outdoorsman, so is that what he wants to do with Tex? “I’m looking forward to pushing him in the swing, throwing the ball with the dog, going fishing. When they’re that age, they don’t care who I am. He loves me because I’m there for him. That’s it, and I don’t want to rush that either.”
Luke kicks off his 2023 World Tour on March 25. That’s a lot to handle with a new baby. “The beauty of it is that for the first few months, it will be one show a week. That’s a lot of time at home with my family. The Europe tour is 3 weeks, then I’m off for 5 weeks. It’s the biggest tour, but the least number of shows. And we’ll play for about a million people.”
Any thought of bringing Tex on the road? “No, Tex is so little, his schedule is so important to his development. There’s not much for him to do on the road except sit on the bus. There are more support services here for him.”
When Gabby Barrett was Lon’s co-host, she teased that Luke Combs had sent her a song. So Lon asked Luke about it, and he said, “I won’t give it away, but I came up with song ideas around the birth of my son. At the time, I didn’t know what if it was going to be a boy or girl. This was one of the girl titles. You’ll see when she puts it put that I couldn’t have put it out. We had her in mind when we wrote it.”
A few weeks ago, Luke performed at the Grammy Awards: “It was different. It’s such a big stage, I tried not to look at the crowd, not make yourself nervous, but it was crazy. I’m not the best guitar player, and the first verse and chorus of the song is all guitar. I was nervous that I’d mess that up, and there’s no one who can save you. It was fun, I’m glad we did it.
Luke also has great stories this week about Dierks Bentley, Lainey Wilson, Riley Green, Dan & Shay, and more.
