Megan Moroney’s CMA Night
This week’s co-host Megan Moroney is the reigning CMA New Artist of the Year. Winning was just the cherry on top of an amazing night.
Let’s talk about the CMA awards show. You won an award. I did. Had you ever been to the award show before? Yeah, so I had gone two years prior. I was a host on the red carpet. The year before that I was nominated for a few like I think I was nominated for new artists and something in song of the year with Tennessee orange. Lost both of those and then I won this time. Followed Jelly Roll as the new artist of the year. I like it crazy.
Tell me about that night and winning the award and being in the audience. Yeah, I kind of blacked out. I don’t really remember much. I genuinely didn’t think I was gonna win though, you know, your publicist kind of tells you to have a speech prepared. I didn’t have anything prepared because I was like, there’s literally no way and anytime I prepared a speech. I’ve jinxed myself. So it’s like I’m not preparing.
Who did you think was going to win? There’s just so many I like Shaboozey was up for it Zach Top, Parker McCollum, I think was up for it, too. I was just like, out of all of them. I wouldn’t pick me. I think I was the only female too, maybe if I’m remembering that correctly. I don’t know just in my brain. I was like, yeah, that’s probably not gonna happen. So I’m not gonna prepare a speech, so I was genuinely shocked and I think that that’s one of the coolest parts of my career that I’ve experienced so far. I don’t know. You obviously don’t do this for awards, but that just that one specifically to that award. I was like, this is crazy.
Yeah, did you meet anybody that night or at rehearsals that you had not met in the country music world? So Miranda Lambert had tapped me on the shoulder that night and was saying congrats, which I thought was really cool because I didn’t know who tapped me on the shoulder and then I turned around I was like, Oh my god. Hi, because obviously she’s a big inspiration for me and I think one of the craziest parts of the night was the fact that I shared a dressing room with Kacey Musgraves. That was very, very cool considering back in 2014 or something. I waited outside of her bus and got a picture of her that way. Yeah. And you mentioned her album was the one that kind of got you really into songwriting and and that yeah So was that just serendipitous? That’s just like yeah, it was one of those things too, And I knew she was performing that night. And so I did wanted to kind of stay out of her way, you know, Cuz you don’t want to be in you don’t want to bother anybody. So like for the first 15 minutes, I kept it pretty cool. And then like after 15 minutes, I was like you literally I talk about you in literally every single interview ever, you know, I love you. I just have to say that can we please take a picture and she was so sweet and so nice and was like, Thanks for all the nice things you say about me. Like I know that girl has heard me say it because it literally at all times. I’m like, I love Kasey Musgraves So just the fact that she was so cool on a night that’s kind of stressful, I thought that that was really sweet of her because I was I was literally like if she doesn’t want to talk to me. It’s probably fine because I get stressed out sometimes and like overwhelmed like I don’t know how she is. You know mentally so I’m just gonna like stay out of her way. But I knew I could not be in share a dressing with her dressing room with her and not be like, you know. I love you so much.
I’m curious about more heard more about you and Miranda Lambert. Have you guys chatted since the award show? Talk about writing. I haven’t chatted with her. No, Believe it or not. I feel like I really haven’t had any time off. I mean I did go to the beach for a long time. So that kind of you know. Didn’t allow me to hang out with any Nashville folks, but yeah, I would love to write with Miranda. Just I’m just always so impressed with how she keeps making great music.
