Jelly Roll Returns 3/8-9

| March 3, 2025

The co-host this wknd is Jelly Roll, who returns for a second week. He’s still in the Top 5 with Liar. He talks about his new role on American Idol as Artist In Residence. Idol Season 23 begins on Sunday. He also previews his first-ever tour of Europe. Plus, Lon asks if he’s planning another collaboration with Lainey Wilson.

Season 23 of American Idol begins Sunday, and Jelly will appear as the first Artist In Residence: “Halfway through the season, like Episode 5, I come in, and I mentor these kids through the end of the season. You wanna see me be a snotbox, tune in to Idol.  I’ll be crying all over national television all year.”

Lon asked Jelly if he has more collaborations planed with Lainey Wilson: “We’re talking about something.  I just talked to her the other day.  This is crazy talk, I’m tellin’ too many secrets today. But I told her this time is like the outlaw movement in the 70s.  The outlaws didn’t just have one song.  They had catalogues of songs. They built a brand around their kinship. We’re gonna do songs together for 20 years.  This is our era. We should work more together.”

Lon asked him to explain that even further: “I look at what’s happening now, and it’s hotter now than it was in the 90s.  There are more stadium acts now than the 90s.  Now, we have Morgan, Post, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Combs, so I think we’re in the golden era.  We should talk about it more.”

Jelly continued talking about his conversation at CRS with Eric Church.  He told Lon, “Right now, I’m working on my third album.  Eric’s third album was Chief.  That’s why I asked him if he felt that Chief was fixing to change the complete cultural landscape.”

He also named his favorite Eric Church song: “Record Year is Top 10 of all time.  Every word, the bridge on the second verse, he doesn’t name big hits.  He took us to that place of being deep in the music.”

In addition to his summer tour with Post Malone, Jelly will be doing his first tour of Europe: “We’re planning on going a week early and leaving two weeks later.  We’re going to see it all.  We’re gonna hang out over there. We’re going to see Egypt and everything on that side of the world.”

Jelly also has great stories this week about Post Malone, Dustin Lynch, Bailey Zimmerman, Kenny Chesney, and Jason Aldean.

NEXT WEEK: Cody Johnson
