Tim McGraw Co-Hosts 8/10-11
The co-host this wknd is Tim McGraw, who is in the Top 20 with One Bad Habit. The song is on Tim’s latest EP Poet’s Resume. Tim has lots of stories about artists in the countdown, including Tyler Hubbard, Thomas Rhett, Brett Young, and Chris Janson.
Tim had this to say about One Bad Habit: “I just loved the lyric right off the bat. Then when we got into the studio, we tore it all apart and put it back together, it came out fantastic. It was a lot slower when we first heard the demo. I love the guitar work on that song. The band picked up on the vibe I wanted to do. It was one of those songs that fell into a groove with me singing. When the record was done, we were blown away with it.”
Lon asked Tim about his own bad habits: “I got a lotta bad habits. The worst one is when my wife says pick your stuff up off the bathroom floor. I spent 30 lives of my life where I live in hotels, and just throw stuff everywhere and leave it a mess. So I do that at home, and it doesn’t go over well. That’s probably the worst bad habit my wife gets on me about. But there are plenty more!”
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Tim’s first #1 Don’t Take The Girl. The song peaked in June 1994. “I sang it at the New Faces show in February 94. Which, backstage that night was the very first time I met Faith. We took a picture. You gave me that picture and I posted it for our anniversary. My knees went weak. I was definitely smitten with her. It took her a while. I had that ugly red & black jacket on. I’m surprised she paid any attention to me.”
Lon asked if Tim thinks about these milestone anniversaries: “I hear about it from my management, they tell me that this happened or that happened. I’m like, what’s next. I’m always looking forward. I don’t look back. I figure when I’m sitting in my rocking chair, maybe I’ll reflect. But I’m not good at reflecting. I still feel like I got a lot more in me.”
How far in the future is that rocking chair? “I don’t know. I still feel pretty young, I still feel pretty vibrant, I feel like I wanna make music, keep working on my craft. If I ever get to the point where I think I’m good, I should hang it up.”
While Tim was in a reflective mood, Lon asked about the late Toby Keith: “Yeah our first albums came out the same day. His did a lot better than mine. I remember the first time I met Toby, we were playing a small club, he opened for us. The minute he played Should’ve Been a Cowboy, I went, what are we doing, we should be opening for him, they’re way better than we are. But he was a great guy, he did things his way, and I appreciate that.”
Tim also has great stories this week about Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett, Tyler Hubbard, Keith Urban, and Chris Stapleton.
NEXT WEEK: Drew Baldridge
