Cody Johnson Co-Hosts 8/24-25

The co-host this weekend is Cody Johnson, who is in our Top 5 with “Dirt Cheap.” Cody is on the road with his Leather Tour. He talks about his Texas ranch, and how he identifies with the story of Dirt Cheap. He also says a big country star was pitched the song first and missed it.

He told Lon, “I am that old man in that song.  The ranch mentality is very different. I’ve already got the oak tree picked out where I’m going to be buried.  I want my grandkids to own this land.”

Lon asked Cody about his ranch back in Texas: “Right now we’ve got 358 acres.  We run cattle on most of it, plus horses.  I’ve lost count of what we’ve got.  It’s not lucrative unless you have a thousand acres. I’ve got a handshake deal to buy some land that surrounds my area.  At that point, it’ll be a true working ranch.”

The video for Dirt Cheap stars country legend Red Steagall: “He’s been a friend of mine for ten years, and a great mentor. I called him, and said ‘I want you to star in my video. You have to play an old man who doesn’t know what’s going on.’  He says ‘That shouldn’t be too hard.'”

Cody told Lon, “I’ve always wanted to do a song with Lainey Wilson.  I’m going duck hunting with her boyfriend Duck. I guess that’s how he got his name, because he’s really into hunting. I heard Loretta Lynn’s ‘Louisiana Woman Mississippi Man,’ I called Lainey and said we should record that song together, and she agreed.  But we haven’t done it yet.”

Cody is playing a concert in Brazil this weekend: “There is one of the biggest rodeo in the world in Brazil. There are over 150,000 people who attend.  They called me, and we sold the thing out.  That’s pretty cool. There’s no team roping in this rodeo, so I won’t be taking part in the rodeo. Just playing the concert.”

Cody met Post Malone at the ACM Awards: “I’d never met Post Malone, but I knew he was from Texas.  He snuck into the bathroom to smoke a cigarette.  I walked in after him.  We got to talking, and I think we’re gonna go hunting in October.  I’m gonna guide him on a hunt in Texas. He’s a genuine guy.”

Cody says Dirt Cheap was pitched to Luke Combs: “He didn’t click on it.  So here’s to you Luke! He didn’t listen to it until I after released it.  He thought the title looked familiar.  I talked about it afterwards, he had some choice words to say about Dirt Cheap.  I said, ‘Everything happens for a reason.'”
