Brad Paisley Previews Moonshine
Brad Paisley is about to release his 11th album on August 25th called “Moonshine In The Trunk.” Brad previewed several songs from the album with Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton:
The album is a mason jar half-full kind of record. The moonshine is at least half-full or more. There’s enough reality in the world. Actually there’s enough negativity in the world, and I’m not adding to it.
The album is summed up in a couple of songs. The song “Crushin’ It” is the first song on the album, and it says there’s a lot of things I’m not good at, but one thing I can do is crush a beer can on my forehead, and on Friday night, that’s what I’m going to be doing. The other song “Limes,” the hook of the song is life gives us limes, make margaritas. And life frequently gives us limes.
The last track on the CD is “Country Nation,” which is what the tour is named after. Then there’s a hidden track on the album. I recut the Tom T. Hall song “Me & Jesus.” Just me & a guitar on a Friday night. I wanted to put some sort of gospel song on the album. When George Jones died, his wife Nancy called me, and asked if I’d sing that song at the funeral. She said it was George’s favorite gospel song. So I did that with me and a guitar, and it’s dedicated to George & Nancy Jones on the album.
Tell me about a song called “Shattered Glass:” I think that women today, it’s tougher to be a woman in modern society than it is to be a man. I see that as a supportive husband. They deal with things we don’t have to deal with. I wanted to write a song that was a tribute. It looks at the positive side of being a woman, that today is the best time to be a woman. And continuing to get better. The song Shattered Glass is a song about belief in a woman’s abilities and saying ‘I believe in you, go do what you want, and I will sit in the passenger seat for you when you need that.” I wrote it with two things in mind: If my wife is going to do these things, what is it like to be her, and secondly if I were to have a daughter, what would I say to her, what advice would I give her.
I understand there were some parts of this album were recorded in the bar in your studio? The song “Gone Green,” all of the percussion was recorded in that room. That’s the only percussion, there’s no drum track. It’s the one song on the album I didn’t write, it’s written by my bass player Kenny Lewis. He brought it to me and I thought it was perfect. The hook of the song is about rednecks going green. I told them we’re not going to use any electric instruments. It’s all acoustic. It says on the album, “No electricity was used in performing this song.”
