Kip Moore Debuts New Music
It was billed as “An intimate evening with Kip Moore.” The location was a 75 year old restored movie theater on Main Street in Franklin TN. The audience was made up of about 200 invited guests, music and media industry insiders, family, and fans. That’s pretty intimate! In fact, during the pre-show cocktail party in the lobby, Kip himself came out to greet the people.
The first half of the show was a movie about Kip’s journey from a small town in South Georgia to the big island of Hawaii to Nashville. The movie, titled “Burn The Whole World Down,” was made by a friend, PJ Brown, who has joined him for much of the journey. Kip said, “My closest friend makes films, and I wanted to give people an inside look into my life.” In it, you see a 22-year old Kip surfing in Hawaii, living in a hut, and dreaming about his future. Then you see him playing music in New York and other big cities. The movie went inside the recording studio, where Kip is working on the follow-up to his debut album “Up All Night.” And then, we see the sacrifice Kip has made to take this journey. No fancy mansion to call home. Instead, a crowded room in an old building. “All my worldly possessions, everything I consider important, are in that room.” You can see guitars, a surfboard, and a bed.
While the journey may have been ten years, all the action has happened in the last two years. It began with the #1 hit “Somethin’ Bout a Truck,” then followed with two more #1s: “Beer Money” and “Hey Pretty Girl.” It led to a CMA nomination for New Artist Of The Year.
All that is in the past, and now Kip is focused on the future. The takeaway from this movie is that when Kip is focused on something, it usually gets done. The movie ends, and Kip comes on stage. He answered some questions from the fans. One asked “What’s the biggest life change?” Kip thinks and responds, “I didn’t realize all that comes with it, so much gossip around your name. I’m still learning about that.” He was joined by his guitar player to perform some songs from his forthcoming sophomore album. He’s been performing one of the songs, “Unless Heaven Has a Dirt Road,” on the road all year. He said “I like to play new music for the people, and get their reaction.” With that, he introduced a song he’d just written that week, called “The Comeback Kid.” He told the audience, “The album was done, and then this one came along.”
The show ends with his brand new single: “Young Love.” Kip told us he actually wrote it 6 years ago: “It’s one of the only ones on the record that’s an older song. We all had stories about us against the world relationships. My co-writer, Dan, has an amazing wife who stood by him all these years when they didn’t have anything, and they made through all the bad to get to the good. It’s one of those things that will relate to everyone, from 13 to 80.”
