Luke: Willie’s A Bigger Star Than Me

| October 13, 2013

Luke Willie ACMLuke Bryan is one of the biggest stars in country music.  He’s the reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year.  His latest album went Platinum in 6 weeks.  He’s selling out arenas across the USA.  But when it comes to star power, Luke admits his friend Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty is a much bigger star.  He told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “Willie & I go out to eat some lunch, Willie walks in with me, and I have to bodyguard Willie!  People are knocking me over, I’m taking pictures, they don’t have a clue who I am.  So I’m like, ‘Willie, you’re a much bigger star than me, old buddy.’  In this business there’s a humbling minute around every turn.”

Willie comes to Nashville quite a bit.  In fact, Luke says he sometimes stays at Luke’s house: “Willie spends a couple nights at my house with his hairy crew.  All of Willie’s assistants all look like Willie.  If you want to work for the Robertsons, you could be a Harvard graduate.  But if you don’t have a long beard, you’re not getting the interview.”

Luke joins his friend Willie on the new Duck Dynasty Christmas album “Duck The Halls: “Willie calls me and goes, ‘Hey you gotta sing on this Christmas song, and it’s called ‘Wishing You a Hairy Christmas And a Happy, Happy, Happy New Year.’  It’s fun, I’m so happy to be a part of it, what Duck Dynasty symbolizes is not just a bunch of guys duck hunting.  It’s more of a humble Christian way of life.  I told Willie it’s the modern day Happy Days.  It’s obviously countrier than Happy Days.  But it feels good and honest, and a good family unit on TV, and that’s what they’ve embodied.”

Luke and Jason Aldean are partners with Willie on the Outdoor Channel TV show “Buck Commander.”  Luke told Lon that he’s actually gone duck hunting with the Robertsons: “We sat in a duck blind, and being around Phil Robertson, he’s just an amazingly wise man.  When he meets you, he categorizes you, and that’s how he refers to you.  So he says to me, ‘So tell me something,’ country singer.’  It’s stuff like that that’s just fun.  That’s what the south’s about.”

Duck Dynasty’s new Christmas album “Duck The Halls” will be released on October 29th.  In addition to Luke, the album also features George Strait and Josh Turner.
