Keith Urban #1 10-7-13Keith Urban had one day off in a busy schedule, and he spent it at a Nashville party for his 15th #1 song: “Little Bit Of Everything”  The affair was held in a private rooftop space overlooking the clubs on Lower Broadway.  In keeping with the song, the food featured a variety of sliders and treats that, when assembled together on a plate, were a “little bit of everything.” Before the party, Keith spoke to the media: “If somebody can’t fit in a #1 party, they need to stop making records!  It’s crazy busy right now, this is my one day in town.  We played a show in West Palm Beach Saturday night, got home yesterday, and I leave for Detroit tomorrow for two days of Idol [auditions.]”

“Little Bit of Everything” was Keith’s 15th #1 song, and the first from his new album, “Fuse.”  He said he was captivated by the song the minute he heard it: “As soon as I heard ‘hanging a disco ball in an old oak tree,’ I was like, OK what’s this song about?  I just liked the imagery of it, I liked the spirit of it, and then the simplistic melody.  These songs sound so easy to write, but they’re so rare.”

When Keith co-hosted Country Countdown USA, he told Lon Helton about the unusual instrumentation of the song. “The demo the writer did had a ukulele intro, but it was just rhythmic.”  So we asked the writer about that: “Actually it was a guitalele, it’s like a 6-string ukulele, except it’s tuned to A.  It’s tuned like a regular guitar which is easier to play.”  Keith and his producer heard it, and added the staccato effect at the beginning of the song.

Brett Warren, one of the writers, explained the lyrics: “When we wrote this song, we were talking about wanting a little bit of everything, and I said, ‘I like disco, I like to hunt but I don’t want to wear camouflage all day. That’s wear the disco ball and old oak tree came from.  I like New York City but I don’t want to live there.  I like to drive a car around.”Keith Urban 10-7-13

Keith spoke about the atmosphere on American Idol with fellow judges Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr.: “I think it’s good.  The first day, J-Lo, Harry, and I got together, it just felt like we’d been doing it a long time.  I think that’s why they took their time putting the three of us together.  In theory it seemed like it was going to work, and it worked perfectly. I’ve never had as much fun as we’re having this season.” Keith talked about the talent they’re seeing: “It’s been pretty good. We’ve only done 3 cities, but we went to Boston, a couple days in Austin, and a few days in Salt Lake last week, that was really good, we sent a lot of people to Hollywood from there.  Then we have Atlanta, Detroit, and San Francisco.”

Afterwards, Keith and the writers went to a stage on the rooftop deck to receive plaques, and play the song for everyone.
