McGraw Celebrates Highway #1
Tim McGraw is a superstar by himself. But add Taylor Swift and Keith Urban, and you have a great candidate for Vocal Event of the Year. Two of the three came together in Nashville last week to celebrate the song reaching #1. Tim McGraw was the guest of honor at a party held at The Nashville Tipler. Surprise guest was Keith Urban. Before the party, Tim spoke with reporters.
So Tim, how does it feel to have this song go to #1? “It was cool to have an idea for something, and right for the beginning, I knew what I wanted to do with it. It’s cool when you get to the other end, it turns out exactly like you wanted, or better than you expected. I’ve said before I’m a big fan of Keith, and Taylor is one of those rare artists who come along once in a lifetime, and when I heard this I knew I wanted Keith to start with, but when we made the record, there was no doubt what his sensibilities on the guitar would bring to the record.”
Thoughts about CMA nominations? “Nominations and awards are awesome. They’re a watermark in your career. To have the nomination with Keith & Taylor would be just a cool thing. I’ve had cool collaborations with my wife, and Kenny, so it’s cool to have those things, it shows what the spirit of music is.”
The new single Southern Girl: “It just felt like summertime, we’ve been playing a lot of songs off the new album on the tour this summer, and that one just stuck out with the fans. It just fit the time it would be out.”
Movies? I can’t talk about it, but it’s gonna be a cool movie, I start shooting at the end of September. I’m going out of town to do it.
Singing with Faith: I’d always love to do a duet with Faith. We’d like to do a full album together. But more than that, it’s about finding the right song.
The message in the video: I’m not a big soapbox guy to tell people how to live their lives, and this song doesn’t have anything to do with texting. But having a 16 year old girl, it’s a different world. I was in a position to say it because I have teenage daughters.
Labor Day: The roots of country come from blue collar workers. But country music is for everybody. I think country music at its core has a set of values we sing about and what we represent, and it appeals to blue collar workers. But it doesn’t say it all. It’s always been the appeal of country music.
Worst job? Pickin’ tomatoes in Louisiana.
Going back to Vegas: I have the best of both worlds. It allowed us maximum time at home, we do an intimate show, and I couldn’t do a tour like this. It was a pretty good show, hard to change it, but there’ll be changes.
Advice to Blake & Miranda? They’re great, if there’s any advice, never lose sight of your individuality as an artist.
