Zac Brown Meets Springsteen

| July 17, 2013

Bruce SpringsteenZac Brown was one of a select group of artists asked to perform on the Grammy Tribute to Bruce Springsteen earlier this year.  He talked about the experience with Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “I hung out with my whole CD collection that night.  Everybody that was in my CD collection was wandering around there.  On one mic, I’m singing ‘Glory Days’ with Jackson Brown and Emmylou Harris, and The Boss is on my right, he’s killin’ it, and I’ll never forget that.  And then we won a Grammy!  I’d never met Jackson Brown or Sting before.  Sting is such a Jedi dude.  He’s asking me, ‘When can I see you play?’  I was in  shock.  We’re very blessed.  We go to awards shows, and we don’t expect to win.  We get to play, and that’s good enough for us.  It’s been an amazing year.  We also did the tribute to Levon Helm at the Grammy Awards.”

A few weeks later, Zac was on tour in Australia, and had another meeting with Springsteen.  He told Lon, “The coolest thing, the first night we got into Sydney, Springsteen was playing.  So I took my dad to meet him.  Got to hang with him after the show.  The next night, we invited him to see us play.   So we’re warming up, and in comes Springsteen.  He sits down and listens to us warming up, and says, ‘You guys sing good.’  That’s what he said.  What an incredible guy.  So I got to talk with him again.  He sat in front and watched my entire show.  Came back afterwards, and he’s really paternal, telling me what to do and not do.  He’s in incredible shape, so I asked him about his exercise routine.  He says, ‘When I get into a town, I go to a local gym, work out for an hour and a half, and get ready for the show.’  He also told me about his kids.  He said, ‘The only thing in limited supply is your kids being young.’  That was heavy.  He said, ‘They’ll only be little for a little while.’  He built his life around their schedule, and that’s what we do.  I want to be there, and I want them to know me, I want to be engaged with them.  He reinforced that.  You can’t not listen to Springsteen.”
