Jerrod Niemann’s Surprise Visit

You never know who might drop in during Country Countdown USA.  This week as Lee Brice co-hosted, his friend Jerrod Niemann came by to say hello.  While in the studio, the two talked about the song they wrote together: “Only God Could Love You More:”

“(Lee) We started the song in another way.  Then Jerrod ended up with a different idea.  (J) One night I was writing a different song, and it happened to rhyme with this one, and I called Lee up.  We were in Vegas for the ACMs a year ago, and we all got together and finished the song.  It means a lot to me because certain songs connect with the fans, and this one has done that.”

Then how did you decide who was going to record it? (Lee) The night we wrote it, I was going in to record the next day.  I went in and played it for the label, and they didn’t go for it, so I couldn’t convence them to do it.  It woulnd’t have been the same if I had done it.” (Jerrod) But if you’re ever around Lee and ask him to sing it, you won’t be disappointed.”

Any other songs come out of that session? (Jerrod) My previous single, Shinin’ On Me.  We also wrote “Always Be Beautiful” that Blake Shelton recorded. (Lee) We’ve only written five songs together, but all five have been special, and got recorded, so we’re gonna keep working together.”

Are there certain lines that each of you brought to the table? (Lee) The reason we changed it was because Jerrod came to me at the ACMs and sang the first line, ‘The things you say, they hit me with a left sometimes.’  Jerrod changed the song to where it needed to be.” (Jerrod) The great thing about writing with Lee is he has a different way of approching a melody, so it’s great to learn from your buddies as well.”

So are the two of you leaving for a show today? (Lee) Yeah we’re gonna hit the road, we love to do shows together any chance we get.  (Jerrod) We’re doing a St. Jude benefit, and Randy Houser’s gonna join us too.  We’re gonna try and write song together too”

Lee’s wedding is a week away, so will you be there too? (Jerrod) I wouldn’t miss it for the world.  His little fiance is an amazing girl.  Anybody who can trap the honey badger is an amazing woman!
