Zac Brown New BFF: Keith Urban

Keith ZacOne of the highlights during the CMA Awards show back in November was Keith Urban’s performance of “Georgia Woods” with Zac Brown.  But the real story happened before the two got on stage.  Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton asked Zac about the rehearsal: “We actually had a rehearsal a couple week’s before the show, and he said, ‘I’ll come by your studio and pick you up,’ and he literally came.  He drove an old 73 pickup truck over to the studio and picked me up himself, and drove me over to the rehearsal space, and I got to spend time in the truck with Keith on the way there and on the way back and got to know him as a man.  I asked him questions because he has a family, and his wife is a very dynamic lady too, so they’re both making concessions to get around each other’s career for the ability to get together.  It’s amazing how they deal with their life and balance with their kids and everything too.  I just asked him, ‘Do you ever feel like your head’s gonna blow off?’  And he said, ‘No.’  Little questions I can only ask people in a similar scenario.    It’s not a normal thing, and I was surprised when he said no. There’s a lot of amazing thing that comes in our lifestyle, but there’s a lot of unique situations where you don’t have a lot of people you can call and ask questions and say ‘What was this like for you?’  And he said, ‘Any time you want to talk, you can call me.’  And I have no complaints, but I know if I hit a wall and needed somebody to talk to, I know I could call him.  That means a lot, and that’s the kind of guy he is.  Such a great dude, and great spirit.  He is energized and excited about everyday creation of things, and it’s a great thing to hear and be around.”

So how did this whole performance come about?  Who suggested Zac to play with Keith?  The Producer of the TV show had the idea to put us together, and figure out what that was, and he contacted Keith, and Keith said he’d like to do it, and have us sing and play together.  I’ve been a Keith Urban fan forever, I didn’t know him that well, although he’s always been nice to me.  It’s nice to get to know the man behind who he is also.  He’s about as genuine a man as you can get, and it seems like the people in this business who are the best are genuine people.  The people like Keith Urban and Brad Paisley and the people who are iconic in country music are great people.  Keith sings pretty high, so when we got together to rehearse Georgia Woods, I was like, man that’s high!  I was gonna sing harmony with him, and it was at the top of my range to just sing the melody, but it was so much fun.  I was having to think a lot, try not to mess it up, remembering the words, it went by so fast, but when I saw it afterwards, I was very pleased with it.”
