Church: CMA Open “A Disaster”

| December 15, 2012

The CMA Awards Show calls itself “Country Music’s Biggest Night.”  They spend a lot of time picking the first performance, because it is meant to ‘wow’ the audience.  This year, the show chose Jason Aldean’s new song “The Only Way I Know,” featuring Luke Bryan and Eric Church.  We’ve already given you Luke’s thoughts on the performance.  Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton asked Eric Church about the rehearsal: “It was a disaster!  The first performance in the rehearsal, all the powers that be are sitting there, it’s our big open to the CMA Awards, and we just all kinda walked out there, and there was no prompter working, we’re all looking at each other, and we all had to buy the song on stage!   We were arguing over who sang where, so we had an iPhone, holding it up to our ears, saying, ‘That’s you, that’s me,’ so I’m sure the CMA folks were sitting there thinking about a back up.  Luckily after a couple times rehearsing, we got to where it was good, because we had not sung it since we’d been in the studio, and that’s a year ago.  The night we did it on the show was the third full time we’d done it.  We just went for it at that point in time.

Lon told Eric, “I think Luke said that one was close to right.”  Eric responded, “Yeah, it was close.  He flubbed the line at the end. But it’s not really his fault, because earlier in the day it wasn’t his line, even thought it was on the record.  So it’s one of those things that changed.  But what I like is it gave it some charm.  It’s real.  I like stuff like that.  I’m glad I didn’t do it.  (laughs) I’m glad it was his line, not mine.”
