Josh Turner Welcomes Keith Urban
Back in April, Josh Turner was on stage as Keith Urban was inducted as the newest member of the Grand Old Opry. He told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton about the experience:
“I was honored to be asked to be a part of that night. They could have chosen anybody else they wanted for that night, and I was one of the ones that got asked to do it. It was so funny because everybody I talked to thought he was already a member! But it just made so much sense to have Keith become a member of the Opry because he’s been around for so long, he’s a hard worker, he cares about what he does, he cares about country music, he cares about the past and the future. So I got to speak with Keith that night about that. I told him how much I appreciated that he saw it as a responsibility. It wasn’t just entertainment, it wasn’t just fame & fortune, and that’s one place where Keith & I are alike. We view Opry membership as being a responsibility. We have a genre of music to uphold, and instill integrity in it for years to come. So it was cool to talk with Keith, because we’re different artists, but we have a lot in common because we both appreciate where country music came from and we care about where it’s going. He’s taken it one place, and I’ve taken it another, but I think we’re both doing a great thing. One funny thing that happened, when we were on stage, standing there with Trace and Keith, and Pete Fisher of the Opry says, ‘Keith we have a special guest who wants to give you a video message,’ and I leaned over to Keith and said, ‘It’s Richard Simmons.’ And Keith bowed his head in laughter, it was hilarious. Instead he got Brad Paisley. Same thing!”
