Brantley Gilbert’s Brass Knuckles
A couple months ago, Lee Brice told us an interesting story about Brantley Gilbert. The two were on the road as part of Willie Nelson’s tour, and it was Lee’s birthday. Brantley gave Lee a gift of brass knuckles. He says, “Now these ain’t the fake kind. You ain’t supposed to have these.” So when Brantley was on Country Countdown USA, Lon Helton played him Lee’s story, and Brantley said, “OK, that was supposed to be a secret! Brass knuckles are my thing. I carried them for a long time when I played the bar circuit. There weren’t security guards, if a fight broke out and they got near your equipment, you had to take care of yourself. I ain’t sayin’ I ever used ’em. But you had to learn to hold your own, and I carried them with me ever since. Lee’s a big guy, and I think he could handle himself, but I like to have my buddies be prepared for anything.”

So what was it like being on the road with Willie? “I didn’t get to spend a lot of time, I went on his bus once, but I didn’t do ‘THAT,’ if you know what I mean. I’ve heard that Toby Keith song about Weed With Willie, and it kind of scared me. To watch him perform was awesome.”
