Blake Discusses “Over You”

| April 7, 2012

By now you’ve probably heard Miranda Lambert’s touching hit song “Over You.”  She wrote the song with her husband Blake Shelton based on a conversation they had about Blake’s older brother Richie, who died 20 years ago in a car accident.  When Blake co-hosted Country Countdown USA, he revealed to Lon Helton the circumstances behind the song: “I’ll never forget the night we wrote “Over You.”   The reason we were talking about my brother Richie is there was a TV special on that was the backstory of my life, and ironically it was my dad talking about my brother, and one of the things he said was ‘You don’t ever get over something like that, you just get used to it.’ Then we turned the TV off, and I started talking about him, and we wrote the song.  Now dad passed away in January, and the song hits home with me all over again, and now with Miranda in a new way.  It’s one of those songs that’s really important to me to have that release and feel like in some weird way that their memory is honored.  It’s exciting to me to see people react to something that is that personal to me.  That’s why I got into this business, is to touch people’s lives, that’s where all this begins, that’s why we sit down and pick up a guitar in the first place.”
