George Strait Celebrates First #1

| March 17, 2012

George Strait has more #1 songs than any other recording artist with 58. But of those big hits, the only song George actually wrote was “Here For a Good Time.”  Last month, George surprised radio programmers by performing at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium during the annual Country Radio Seminar.  After performing two songs acoustically, George was presented a plaque for his first #1.  When he co-hosted Country Countdown USA, he spoke with Lon about that special day: “That was a nice thing they did.  I haven’t been much about songwriting, but the past few years I wanted to start writing again, from the pushing and shoving from my son.  It’s been rewarding to write with him.  To have one of our songs go #1 meant so much.  It was a song he had the idea to write, and we helped finish it.  So I’m proud of him and proud of the fact we finally got a #1.  Bubba wasn’t able to come to Nashville because little Harvey was just a couple weeks old.  But he would have loved to have come.  We gotta get him up to Nashville, have a party, and celebrate!

Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium is a very historic location to hold a #1 party for George.  He told Lon it was  a very rare visit to the Ryman: “I haven’t performed at the Ryman but for one time before then, when I did the tribute to Alan Jackson.  What a great place that is to sing, I wanna some day go back, take my band and do a show in there sometime.  I think it would be great.  It’s so intimate, everybody’s right there.  I wanna do that before I’m done.  It’s on my list.”
