Blake Shelton is Prepared to Host

| March 31, 2012

This Sunday night, Blake Shelton will join Reba as co-hosts of the Academy of Country Music Awards.  It’s his second time as co-host, and he talked about it with Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “I think we’ll be better because we’re more relaxed, or at least I am.  Me not being relaxed last year and being nervous probably made Reba a little nervous.  But now I’ve got quite a bit of television time under my belt since this time last year.  I’m just gonna go out there and do it, and appreciate it for what it is, that it’s an honor to stand there with Reba as the host.  I’m not stressed out about it, because I know now what it is, what it is to do it, so hopefully it’ll translate to being a better show.

Do you get involved in the writing? I do a little bit.  Last year, most of the controversial jokes are ones I can up with.  These network folks know how to walk the line and still have funny jokes.  I don’t have that filter, so I come up with stuff I probably shouldn’t say.  That’ll be what’ll happen this year too.  If anybody says anything off-color won’t be Reba, it’ll be me, and so I don’t want people to be upset with the network or Reba.  They can get mad at me right now, because I’ll be the one who upsets them, but at the same time, I don’t give a crap!

Give an example of your off-color humor: I’m performing my current hit, “Drink On It,” in the show.  So yesterday we were rehearsing the song on the set.  People may not know that the album version of the song is different from the radio version.  There are a couple words in it we don’t say on the radio.  So yesterday while I was rehearsing the song, we did the album version.  And when we got to the particular words, a guy came running down the aisle from the back of the hall with his arms flying in the air saying we can’t use those words on TV.  So I guess we’re going to have to use the radio version on the awards show.  Tune in and see!

Actually the awards show isn’t the end of your TV work this week, is it?  Hosting the ACMs, immediately after the show is over I have to hop on a plane and go to LA so I can wake up there in the morning working on The Voice.  The first live episode of Season 2 airs Monday night.  The good part is the role on The Voice is similar to my role as host of the ACMs.  Kind of controlling the ship, and that’s how I am with my team.  I just try to help them.  It’s not going to be that tough of a transition going from the ACMs to The voice, it’s just how big of a hangover I’m gonna wake up with.
