Crazy Girl: Anatomy of a Hit

| November 4, 2011

This week, the Eli Young Band got the news their latest hit, “Crazy Girl,” has been certified Platinum for over 1 million downloads.  It’s their first song to achieve that status.  They spoke with Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “It’s crazy what this single has done for us, we’re so humbled by the success of the single and the reaction from the fans.  It’s crazy to hear their numbers.  You can feel it on the road, as soon as you start playing it for the fans, it was right away.  The crowd gets their Crazy Girl bracelets we sell on the road, and it’s wild to see what they do.”

“Crazy Girl’s” rise to the top began about five years ago.  Songwriters Lee Brice and Liz Rose wrote the song.  At one point, it was being considered for Lee’s debut album, released last year.  The album already had a song with “crazy” in the title: “Love Like Crazy.”  So the song became available.  Lee was writing with Eli Young’s James Young: “The first time we heard it, me & Mike Eli were in Nashville listening to songs, and heard it on the way to the airport.  It hooked us right there, and when a song hooks you like that, you know it’s special.”  Mike Eli said, “We listened to it 5 or 6 times, and texted the other guys in the band, and said this song could be the big one for us.”  Bass player Jon James added, “We were at a writers retreat with Lee and got to know him, and even wrote another song with him that’s on our record.”  Mike said, “When Lee decided not to put ‘Crazy Girl’ on his record, he gave it to us.”
