Lady A “Own The Night”

| September 11, 2011

In 2010, Lady Antebellum released their second album, Need You Now.  Powered by the title track, the album sold more than 3 million copies, and earned 5 Grammy Awards.  So with their third album, Own The Night, about to be released this week, did they try to top themselves?  Country Countdown USA host Lon Helton asked them what impact did that album have?  The groups Hillary Scott responded, “It can either pigeon-hole you or give you freedom.  If you look at it as freedom, we’ve already had this wonderful season of success.  That can’t be changed.  We just need to continue what we’re doing.  You can’t compare the next album to the one before because it’s all a progression of our work and our life.  Do we want to have every single to be as successful as “Need You Now?”  Of course we do.  But it’s not realistic, and we’re OK with that because we accept where we are in the moment.”  Dave Heywood added, “The funny thing is the way ‘Need You Now’ came about was with no expectations.  So what we’re trying to emulate is the way we wrote ‘Need You Now,’ which is with no expectations, sitting in a room writing a song.  We’re not trying to emulate and recreate the success of what that song did, but we didn’t know it would do that.  So our approach was the same, just write a bunch of songs, whatever makes the album makes it, and they’re all gonna take a life of their own, and no expectations for it.  It would be paralyzing to approach every song the same way.”

Lon also asked how they’d describe the album, and Hillary responded: “It’s a pretty reflective album if I had to pin it to one word.  We have one song called ‘Dancing Away With My Heart,’ and it’s that moment on reflecting back on a relationship, wondering how they are now.”  Charles Kelley added, “I think it’s pretty relatable, we can all think back to one or two people who shaped our life, and we wonder where they are now.”  Dave described the album-making process this way: “These albums are so much of a time and mind consuming process for us.  We’re obsessed with making these albums.  This is every day from January on this year.  Every little nuance, we’ve slaved over and lost sleep on.  This is our life and everything we have we put into these records.”

“Own The Night” by Lady Antebellum is available everywhere Tuesday September 13.
