Jake & Darius Talk Trash

| September 9, 2011

Jake Owen grew up thinking he was going to become a professional golfer.  He won his first tournament at age 15, and went to Florida State on a golf scholarship.  But a wakeboarding accident ended his dreams of pursuing golf as a career, and he discovered music.  But he never gave up golf, and is still very competitive on the course.  So is Darius Rucker.

A couple years ago, Darius started a charity golf tournament in Nashville during CMA Music Fest week.  This year, Jake took part, and Country Countdown USA host Lon Helton was his partner.  As it turned out, Team Jake won!   We caught up with Darius a couple days later, who sounded bitter about his loss: “Jake Owen’s team cheated!  It was Jake and his cousin.  He brought his cousin!  They cheated but they won.”

We played that tape for Jake and he responded to Darius: “One of our players was sick.  My cousin dropped me off at the course.  When we found out we were missing a player, I asked if my cousin could play.  Well my cousin played golf at Western Kentucky, so he’s a pretty good golfer.  But we all played well that day.  I’m excited to have a Darius Rucker trophy on my mantle, after all these years of golf smack talk.  So thanks, dude.”
