Trace Recovers From Tragedy

| August 28, 2011

It’s been 3 months since fire destroyed the Nashville home of Trace Adkins.  In the days and weeks that followed, Trace and his family have said they’re fine, they have another place to live, and the stuff that was lost was just “stuff.”  But Trace told Country Countdown host Lon Helton that he’s felt a lingering sense of loss since the fire.  It’s almost like he’s grieving for a loved one: “At first, I thought I had dealt with it, no problem.  I’d accepted the fact that everything I had in that house was gone.  So I’m going to erase it and move on to the next chapter in my life.  I thought I’d done that.  Now, as I get farther away, it bugs me more.  Because every day you think of something else.  I think I need to get something, and realize I don’t have it any more.  I notice my fuse my be shorter, and I know that’s why, because it’s had a more traumatic effect than I thought.”

After the fire, a lot of Trace’s celebrity friends, as well as quite a few fans, reached out to Trace to offer words of support.  Trace told Lon, “It was amazing to me, just the outpouring of support, the people that contacted me, people that I’m sure had to do a little bit of work to contact me.  I could be the worse name dropper in history telling you the names of people I heard from, and it just warmed my heart.  This community is so caring.  It had never been more evident to me since then.  I need to respond to all the people, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to.”

Trace has been saying that people should direct their support to the Red Cross.  That makes sense, since the Red Cross is first responder to all disasters.  But it turns out the Red Cross also helped Trace: “I was told that within an hour after the fire department responded, the Red Cross was there, and they were taking care of the firefighters.  They made sure they had water, they had sandwiches for them, and I never realized they did that.  They told me they were ready to help whoever needed help.  Thank God the only people that needed help were the fire fighters.  My family was fine.”
