Behind The Countdown: Tornado

| May 6, 2011

If you live in the Southeast, you know there’s been a lot of bad weather this spring. Lots of rain, wind, and tornadoes have hit the area. That was the backdrop to this week’s Countdown. Sara Evans lives near Birmingham Alabama, and the night before she did the Countdown, there were huge storms and a few tornadoes in her area. Her plane was late from Birmingham, and bad weather was the reason. When she got to our studio, she told us the storms had knocked out power to her neighborhood, but things cleared up that morning.

But the damage was bad throughout the state. Randy Owen, leader singer of the band Alabama, told reporters in Nashville that he spent several hours in his basement as tornadoes howled near his house. While his house wasn’t hit, he saw quite a bit of damage. Hank Williams Jr., who still has a home in Alabama, has organized a benefit for tornado victims. Sara Evans and Alabama were among the first to sign up. Others who’ll perform include Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum, and Keith Urban. The benefit concert will be televised on CMT Thursday May 12, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Emergency Relief Fund.
