Where Was Toby on 9-11-11?

| October 22, 2011

Toby Keith has been a strong supporter of the American military, and was inspired to write “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue” after the terrorist attacks on 9-11.  This year, as we commemorated the tenth anniversary of those attacks, Toby found himself in both Washington DC and New York City.

Toby told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton, “What was strange is ever since the real 9-11, I’ve worked every 9-11 since.  This year we didn’t have anything lined up that made sense.  I was in DC the night before for a show, and so we had a lot of Congressmen, upper brass generals, two buses of wounded warriors, we made it a big thank you song.  In the middle of this, Rex Ryan of the New York Jets invited me to attend his game in New York City on 9-11.  It was a little un-nerving to be that close to where it actually happened.  It gave me the willies.”

So on the tenth anniversary of 9-11, Toby Keith was in New York City to attend the Sunday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets.  Lon told Toby the TV cameras showed Toby in the box of Cowboy owner Jerry Jones.  Toby explained to Lon, “I’ve had a lot of connections with the Cowboys.  Rex Ryan came to all my shows in the New York area.  So he invited me to the Jets game.  Before halftime, I saw Jones on TV, and he’s a friend of mine.  So I asked to be escoted to his box, and he asks me to sit down, and while I’m sitting, the camera gets on me.  So I go back to their suite, and they go, ‘So you went to the other side, eh?’ I said, ‘I’ve got friends all over the NFL. Back off’  But they’re both great guys.”
