Tyler Farr Suffers In Peace
Tyler Farr’s debut album “Redneck Crazy” produced a pair of #1 hits: The title song plus “Whiskey In My Water.” Now as he prepared to release the follow-up, Tyler is back in the Top 10 with “A Guy Walks Into a Bar.” He spoke with Country Countdown USA about his sophomore album.
What are your goals for this album: I wanted to give the country fans a look into who I am as a person. Not that they didn’t on the first album, but I wanted to tap into Who Is Tyler Farr. People asked me if I was nervous about making the second one, and no I wasn’t, I was excited about it because I had a whole year of playing arenas, and had a couple hits, so I had more confidence, I knew what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it, and I wanted to capture that in this album so people would say That’s Tyler Farr.
There’s some pain and angst that people might not associate with you. Why? “Because that’s me, to make a great album, you have to put yourself in a vulnerable place, so people can feel the lyrics of the song when you sing it. I think we did a good job of doing that on this album. “Withdrawal” is one of my favorite tracks on the album, it’ll definitely be a single, not sure if it’ll be next, but it has that tension, I’m almost screaming with so much passion, because I’ve been there. That’s what’s endearing to me, it’s not just about a truck or a tractor or a girl, but it’s about raw emotions that everyone feels, so hopefully the audience will connect with it as much as I did.
In your show, you’re ending with A Guy Walks Into a Bar. Why? “If you’re telling a story, that was the ending statement I wanted to leave the crowd with. The reason we put that out as a single is because it represented the new album. I wanted to leave them with the thought if they love it as well as I do, that fans can grab a hold of it, and really felt the same things I felt when I first heard it.
Talk about your association with the military: I’ve always been a huge supporter of the military, a lot of my family members served. We did a Navy tour right before Christmas, played on a Navy carrier, a special moment, and helped me write the song Why We Live Here. It’s the last song on the album, and the last song we cut, and I wanted a tribute to the military, wanted to do it in a respectful manner, and that’s the best way I know how to do it.
Describe the cover photo on the album. The photographer from Rolling Stone magazine did the photo, he has shot photos of me before, and that picture was shot on my land south of Nashville. He took his California style combined with my country style, and that’s where you get me dressed in my show clothes on top of my four wheeler. It was a different look, I’ve never seen an album cover like that. It was fun, it was cold, it was rainy, but I thought it turned out good, and from the album title to the cover, it looks different to me. It connected to me. Who knows why I’m looking off in the distance, or why I’m standing on the four wheeler, but it shows I am an outdoorsman, live in the country, and that’s what we wanted to have on there.
