Garth & Trisha Meet Luke Bryan
Luke Bryan’s CMA Night was memorable for a couple reasons. Obviously, because he won the CMA Entertainer of the Year. But also, because he met one of his childhood heroes, Garth Brooks. Back in September, when he co-hosted Country Countdown USA, Lon Helton asked him if he’d ever met Garth:
(Luke) Garth falls into the Alan Jackson-George Strait world where my legs lock up, and I can’t bring myself to do it yet. I’ve been in a room with Garth, and I don’t know, I duck down into a corner. I want the right opportunity to meet him, and thank him for being such a pioneer.
That opportunity came CMA night, because Garth presented Luke the Entertainer of the Year award. Garth & Trisha Yearwood spoke with Lon about that night:
(Garth) Well he got the right opportunity! He got it!
(Trisha) I have to tell my Luke Bryan story because I met him before Garth did. He was backstage and I was talking with him for a few moments, and he was telling me that ‘I’ve been around him four times, and I’m freakin’ out, and I know he’s here tonight, and I kinda hope I meet him,’ and I was looking over my shoulder because I knew Garth was coming in. He says, ‘Oh don’t look for him, don’t look for him!’ He was freaking out. And I said, ‘Well you’re gonna have to win that Entertainer of the Year award to meet him,’ and then he did, so I enjoyed that moment on stage, because it was genuine.”
(Garth) He’s very sweet. In this business, the first thing you learn about any artist is if they’re a good person or not. And I’ve never heard a bad word in this town with that guy’s name on it. So I already knew he was a winner in that category, which is all that matters to me. But he’s enjoying every minute of the ride. The first time I saw him, he was huggin’ me, and I was huggin’ him.”
Did you chat with him afterwards? (Garth) No, but the guy I spoke with was his dad, his dad filled me in on the story about him and his brother and sister. We hugged each other as a dad to dad. I told him the most important thing is his boy is looked upon as a very nice young man. Anything after that is what it is.”
