FGL Has 3 Songs In Our Top 5
It may be the first time we’ve had a co-host with three songs in our Top 5, two as writers and one as artists. Florida Georgia Line’s Brian & Tyler have their own song “Dirt.” But they also co-wrote Jason Aldean’s current hit “Burnin’ It Down” and Cole Swindell’s “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight.” They talked about their incredible situation with Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton:
You have a unique situation here. Which is the most fun? (Brian) They’re all in a way amazing and a blessing, they’re all our babies, you watch ’em and see how they do. To me, Dirt has been the coolest, it’s a spot in our live show we haven’t had.
Have you had a situation like this where they tangle for #1? (Tyler) We did, Luke was co-writer with us on “This Is How We Roll,” and actually his song “Play It Again” kept us out of #1. That’s how Luke Rolls. It’s still an honor to have songs in the charts.
Why didn’t you record Jason’s song? Timing to be honest. We wrote that song not long after we released our album, and it didn’t make it on our deluxe version either, so we pitched it to Jason, and it felt like it would fit him. Next thing we knew it’s his new single. We moved to Nashville to be songwriters first and foremost, and that’s an honor to get an Aldean cut.
What do you think of Jason’s version of the song? (Tyler) I like the way they produced it, it’s real chillin,’ Jason nailed it, very similar to how we wrote it. (Brian) That’s a classic case of the song ending up in the right hands.
On to the Cole Swindell song “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight.” Talk about co-writing that with Cole: (Brian) That one started on the bus, it was a pretty quick write, it just felt like Cole, and that was a song we wanted him to have, it felt like him, it sounded good when he was singing it, and it’s been awesome watching it go up the charts. (Tyler) You fall in love with a song as you write it, and you could tell he was falling in love with it, he kept saying, ‘I’m gonna cut that song.”
So how do you feel having three songs in the Top 5? (Tyler) Well we just write songs to write songs, that’s what we love, and it’s awesome if any other artist wants to record a song we’ve written, so we’re excited about that.
What can you tell us about Cole? (Tyler) Cole is one of those guys, we’ve known him for years, we spent a lot of time together here in Nashville, trying to get started, so to see him coming up, see him have success is so much fun, so exciting, it’s a cool little bond. (Brian) Cole is one of my favorite people, he’s just killin’ it right now, we get along so well, whenever we meet, we have drinks and party, we’d listen to song after song, we thought we were saving the world with these songs, he’s probably got the video of us singing these songs.”
Let’s talk about your song Dirt, and why it’s the first single from your new album: (Tyler) People asked us how we were going to follow up Cruise, because it was such a huge hit, we feel like Dirt is the song that will keep us on the map. That song is country music. (Tyler) We heard it at the same time, the first time we heard it we knew it was a song for us. We knew it was a monster, so from day 1 it’s been special, took us to a place we call “chill bump city.”
Any special lyrics? (Brian) Getting to the end of that hook, ‘You know you came from it, someday you’ll return to it,’ we’ve all lost and gone through crazy things, that hits home to everybody, it’s powerful on all levels.
