The Day Dustin Lynch Met Garth
From his childhood growing up in Tullahoma TN, Dustin Lynch idolized Garth Brooks. Dustin was just five years old when Garth debuted with “Much Too Young.” He told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: My parents have video of me at age 8 in a cowboy hat with a guitar singing “Rodeo” at the top of my lungs. I can remember wanting to be him. He was a super-hero. He was like Batman to me. It’s always been a fire inside me to want to sing.”
So it must have been amazing when you met him: “The first time I met Garth was at his Hall of Fame induction. I got myself invited to the luncheon. This was before my first single was released. I sit down at a table closest to the stage, since I want to be close to Garth. I started eating my food, and there sitting behind me is Trisha Yearwood. There was an open seat next to her, and I was about four feet from them. Sure enough, he comes over and sits down next to her. At that point I was the most nervous in my life, and I’m not even talking to him yet. He’s just sitting behind me and I’m trying to eat my prime rib, I’m so nervous I can’t chew. Afterwards, they opened it up for questions, and I got to ask him a question. My question was What was your most memorable show to date? He said,’That’s tough, but it is tough to beat the Central Park performance.’ After lunch I asked him a few more questions, and got my picture taken with him. He gave me some advice. He said ‘The reason I’ve been able to do this is long as I have is because I’ve recorded the best songs I could find, whether I’ve written them or not.’ So that’s how I go about making my albums now.
Did you see his show? My first time to see Garth live was when he came out for the first Flood Relief show in Nashville in 2010. Then I got tickets to the last one. So I got to see him come out, then his 9th show in four days. For somebody to do 9 shows was amazing. He went all out, in Garth true fashion. I also saw him in Las Vegas, the one-man show.
So now with new music out, what are your thoughts about Garth now? Now that Garth Brooks is putting out music, I hope I get another song up the charts or around his, where I can get a screen shot or take a picture of the country chart and say I got to share some space with my man, my hero.”
