Dustin Lynch Gets Intimate

| September 20, 2014

Dustin 9-4-14 3A couple weeks ago, Dustin Lynch did a small, intimate concert at a club in Nashville for a few hundred fans and local radio staffers.  He used the show to debut songs from his sophomore album, “Where It’s At.”  Dustin spoke with Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton about his new album:

(Lon) How would you describe what people will hear on this new album? (Dustin) Musically I brought in a lot of new sounds that are from genres other than country.  I listen to an eclectic mix of music, so I brought in some atmospheric tones from other types of music.  We go for a lot of energy with my live show in mind.  I blame Keith Urban for that because I was on tour with him while making this album.  So I texted him and said, ‘Dude, some of these songs are your fault.’  I grew up one George Strait, Garth Brooks, and Alabama.  But I like to stretch my wings.  However, I do tip my hat to George Strait with a song called ‘She Loves a Cowboy.’Dustin 9-4-14 7

I was with you in Cancun with you a few months ago, where you debuted some of these songs on the beach.  What was going through your mind as you played these songs for the first time? For me, the hard part is remembering the words.  It’s the first time I sang those songs, so I haven’t completely memorized them yet.  But I was hoping for a reaction, one way or the other.  If you tell me you like it, I hope you mean it.  I was pretty confident with the songs we had.  It was a two year process to get it to 15 songs out of hundreds.  I was hoping I made the right decisions, and I think I did.

You wrote 5 of the 15 songs on the album.  Talk about the song “Your Daddy’s Boots:” It may be the most special song I’ve ever written. It’s about a moment that happens to a lot of people.  It’s not a moment I’ve had yet, but I’ve played a lot of wedding receptions, and seen a lot of father-daughter dances.  That moment signifies that time when a new man is taking over from a guy who’s been with her from day one.  That’s a huge deal.  The reason I love this song is because it’s an angle that hasn’t been done yet.  I have a feeling “Your Daddy’s Boots” will be a song that will become a part of some people’s lives now.  You wait for songs like that to fall out of the sky and into your lap, so that was a special day in Nashville.  This song was the tipping point for starting work on this album.  I wrote it with the same guys who I wrote “Cowboys & Angels” with.  I started thinking of special moments I could write from, and I came up with the idea.Dustin 9-4-14 5

Let’s go back and talk about writing your debut song “Cowboys & Angels:” That was a song I wrote about my grandparents love story.  They were high school sweethearts, married for 60 years.  It’s so cool to me that anybody finds someone on this earth they want to spend the rest of their life with.  That’s such a cool thing, and the fact I have two people who did that still in my life was special to me.  I knew it was my favorite song I’ve written.  The fact that it was my first tune, and it is about them, you couldn’t ask for a cooler thing.  My grandparents came out to a couple Keith Urban shows.  I’d point them out in the crowd, and they’d have a meet & greet line.  People wanted to meet the Cowboy and the Angel.  My granddad has been a preacher his whole life.  I promised them I’d work hard, and one day you’ll see me at the Grand Ole Opry.  And they were there for my Opry debut, so it was special for them.  I’m very blessed to still have them in my life.
