Chris Young: Injured Hand Update
Chris Young attended a #1 party Monday for his hit “Who I Am With You.” But the big news from the day was Chris was not in a sling, he was not wearing a bandage on his left hand, and he was saying he has mostly recovered from a knife accident in June that practically cut off two of his fingers. “The only thing I can’t do is play guitar, but I’ve got two months of therapy left on it. Because basically when I go to bed, they put a splint on it to keep it straight. Then when I wake up, I bend it. I’m glad I can pick stuff up and use two hands. Like opening a water bottle. That gets really interesting. Somebody busted me when we were on the road and there was steak. I really wanted it, but knew I couldn’t cut it with one hand. So I took it back to the bus, with a fork in my mouth, and it was very funny.” So is the recovery ahead of schedule? “As far as out of the splint, they didn’t have to put a cast on it. When I first did it, they didn’t know if I was going to keep these two fingers or not. I mean, having a permanent “rock on” sign would have been cool, but I’m happy I’ve got all of them.”
Are your people more cautious? “I make a lot of jokes that my parents don’t find funny. Once you know you’re OK, the only thing to do is laugh about it. So I made a bad joke on stage the other night about almost cutting my hand off, and the crowd went “Oooo,” and I’m like, ‘It’s my hand! It’s Ok. You all can laugh.”
Do you find yourself being more cautious now? “If I ever knock a knife off the counter, I’ll jump away. The leg infection last year, there’s nothing I did to cause it. The doctors agree. My hand was just an accident. People say, ‘You seem pretty clumsy,’ and I’m like, ‘This was the only thing that was clumsy!’ So it is what it is.”
How’s it been on the road with Dierks Bentley this summer? “It’s great. The tour’s amazing. My whole summer’s been great. It’s really cool because I had a #1 with this song, and three weeks later, Dierks had a #1 with Drunk On a Plane. Anytime you’ve got multiple people on one tour all having chart-topping hits at one time, it’s a really good sign. It’s timing like that you can’t plan.”
