Jason Aldean’s Burnin’ It Down
Jason Aldean played back-to-back sold out stadium shows last weekend in Cleveland and Cincinnati. In addition to his hits, Jason used the opportunity to debut a brand new single: “Burnin’ It Down.” Jason spoke with reporters before the Cincinnati show to talk about his sexy new song:
This song shows a different side of you than previous singles: Every time we release an album, we try for the first song to be a big uptempo. At the same time, I don’t want to do the same thing. This was a song that came in that I thought was different and cool, so for me it’s going in a different direction to launch an album. It’s probably the steamiest song we’ve come out with, although I thought Dirt Road Anthem was pretty sexy, but that’s just me. I love the song, it’s maybe something people might not expect to hear from us, and I like to throw those songs in.
Will it also be the album title? It might be an album title. I don’t know yet. They’ve been wearing me out about that. A lot of time when all the titles are the same, it helps to connect the dots. I like doing that. As far as this song setting the tone for the rest of the album, I try to do that, try to push the envelope, not feel like we’re making the same record, so I’ve been fortunate to find cool songs that help me do that. I think the first single is the one that sets the tone for everything else. This is a whole new thing, that’s a good thing, and why we wanted to put it out.
In the chorus, you mention “Jammin’ to some old Alabama.” Was that something you added, or was it in the demo? That was in the demo, I can point to that, I thought the song was cool, but the clincher was mentioning Alabama, so the cool thing is the guys from Florida Georgia Line were the writers on this song. I remember when we cut it, we brought those guys in to hear it, and told them, ‘I don’t know why you didn’t cut it, but I’m really glad you didn’t, so thank you for my first single.’ But I’m a huge Alabama fan, so anything that makes reference to something I’m a fan of is cool to have in there.
Any thought to singing this song with Florida Georgia Line? Not this song, but we’ve been looking for a song to do with them. Haven’t found it yet. Three guys singing about burin’ it down with each other? I don’t think it’s a message we want to send. Layin’ naked in bed with Tyler & BK? No! I like those guys, but not in that way!
The song sounds sonically different from your other songs: I think with every album, things are gonna change a little bit. We’re experimenting with guitar sounds on the road, so when we get in the studio, we experiment even more. We try to make things sound cool, and not normal. We get bored with things that sound the same. And it’s hard because there are so many tricks to use, so you have to stay true to your sound, but want each album to sound different.
