Miranda Lambert’s Tabloid Tune
Ever since Miranda Lambert married Blake Shelton three years ago, she’s seen her once-quiet Texas life turned into tabloid fodder. Like most creative people, Miranda found a way to turn her frustrations with the media into a song on her new album. The song is called “Pricilla,” named for the wife of Elvis Presley. She talked about the song with Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “It’s a really fun way of addressing all the tabloid stuff that’s happening right now for Blake & I.”
Isn’t that the strangest thing? You walk in a convenience store and there you are! “Yep! There I am, getting divorced and pregnant with twins. It’s kind of like, well that’s different!. We have two Dollar Stores where I live, so I’ll go in one to get milk, and this lady behind me was literally still in her robe, and she goes, ‘Don’t you wish your life wasn’t so interesting so they wouldn’t talk about you?’ And I said, ‘Yes ma’m sometimes I do.’ Cause it’s right there. But it’s fine. You learn to deal with it, and I love to deal with stuff in my music, people know it’s happening, and I can’t talk to every fan, so the way I can explain it is in my music.”
So what does ‘Pricilla’ say? “It just says this is what’s happening. There’s a pull on your relationship when you’re doing what we do, there’s people who talk about it, and we have to put up a gate, because people pull in your driveway at random hours and want to take pictures, and it’s kind of creepy. But that’s what happens, so it talks about all that.”
“Pricilla” is one of 16 songs on Miranda Lambert’s new album “Platinum,” available June 3rd.
Lon asked Miranda what sets this record apart from her previous albums: “There’s humor in this record. I used to take myself too seriously, shooting people, setting things on fire, and I think it has to do with Blake. He’s very funny and fun, and he brought out the sense of humor in me. I used to be so serious, and the chip on my shoulder, from being a female singer, I felt like I had something to prove. I still have a little anger. I’m good for a barroom brawl every now and then. But Blake is really good at calming me down, and it’s really good for me. There’s a song called ‘Gravity’s a Bitch.” There’s humor and sarcasm, not all meant to be taken seriously, which before was serious.”
