Flatts Salute Strait In Rewind

Rascal Flatts current hit “Rewind” has a personal salute to George Strait in the second verse.  It goes: “Try to talk George Strait into givin’ us an encore.”  When the guys we co-hosted Country Countdown USA with Lon Helton, Jay DeMarcus explained the line: “It’s a great story.  The song was originally written, ‘Try to talk Tom Petty into givin’ us an encore.’  When we were in the vocal booth, Gary said, ‘Hey, since George Strait is retiring this year, why don’t we give him a little nod and say, ‘Try to talk George Strait…'”

Lead singer Gary said, “Yeah the world wasn’t ready for him to quit. George, you didn’t ask anybody for permission! We don’t want you to quit!  You look back at celebrities who retired, and how many times they’ve come back.  It’s such a huge part of your life and who you are as a human being.  Maybe George will do 7 years of farewell tours.

Jay added, “It’s rare to see a country star who’s that beloved by everybody.  Vince Gill comes to mind that everybody loves. George is such an icon in our industry.  If he decides to stay away, it’s gonna be really sad to see him rise off.” Rascal Flatts was part of George’s Artist Of The Decade TV special four years ago.
