American Idol Meets The Voice
Scotty McCreery won the American Idol competition 3 years ago. Danielle Bradbery won The Voice last year. At some point in between, the two actually met in Houston. Scotty told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “The first time I met her was at a meet & greet. She did a little opening act for me before a show outside Houston TX. She came up to me and said, ‘Hey it’s nice to meet you. I’m gonna be on The Voice this year.’ I get that a lot, a lot of people tell me they’re trying out for shows. I just patted her on the back, and said, ‘Good luck Danielle, I hope you do good.’ Lo and behold, a few weeks later, I’m watching her win the whole show. Dad gum, that’s Danielle! She just opened for us! I texted my tour manager, and said, ‘Correct me if I’m wrong, but is that the same girl we saw a few weeks ago?’ And they said, ‘Yeah that’s her.’ It was really cool. She’s a great girl, really proud of her, we’ve had a chance to compare the two shows, and she’s a sweetheart for sure.”
EXTRA: When people come up to you like that, do you have any advice? “I do, I tell them to be unique. Those initial auditions for shows like that, they see thousands of people. I say, ‘Find what makes you different, and show that to them through the song you choose.'”
Song selection is really important, isn’t it? “Definitely. It can be intimidating. We had song meetings every week. Jimmy Iovine was giving his thoughts on what I should sing. You want to take their advice, but you also know who you are as an artist, and what you want to be portrayed as. At the end of the day, you’re going to have 18 million people hear you sing the song, and you don’t want to come across different from who you are. So you have to stand your ground. For me, I was such a country guy, everything came out country.”
