Josh Turner Says “Jones Knew”
Earlier this year, Josh Turner received an invitation to perform at the final George Jones concert. “I’ve actually had the invitation from George framed on my wall, I’ve had it on my wall for several months now.” Sadly, Jones passed away in April, and the show was turned into a memorial. Turner told Country Countdown USA that Jones knew he wouldn’t make it to his final show. “When I went over to visit his Nancy, his widow, at her house, she was telling me about the day she & George were planning out this show. He dropped on the bomb on them then by saying, ‘I’m not gonna be here for this show anyway, you might as well make it a tribute show.’ They tried to talk some sense into him, they thought he was being silly, but he swore up and down he wouldn’t be there. So here we are.”
Over 70 performers were announced to play the “Final No Show,” as it’s called, including George Strait, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Alan Jackson, Dierks Bentley, and many more. “I am so excited how this show has evolved and I will be forever grateful to the artists that are coming to honor George,” says Nancy Jones. “The evening might be long, but I don’t think people will be upset as they will witness the best musical tribute Nashville has ever seen with so many artists performing George Jones songs.”
Josh Turner is performing a Jones song he actually recorded on one of his own albums: “I did “One Woman Man.” It’s a song I’ve done for years in my show, and recorded it on my “Everything Is Fine” album. The fans love it when I hit those low notes. It was an easy choice of songs. When I went through my sound check, I did it twice with my band. Then his widow Nancy walked in and asked ‘Are you done?’ And she asked me to play it again, so we played it a third time for Nancy at sound check.”
Josh also attended George Jones’ 80th Birthday Bash last year.
