Band Perry Reveals 2nd Album
The Band Perry co-hosted Country Countdown USA this past week, and revealed details about their highly-anticipated second album, “Pioneer.” They told Lon Helton: “This project certainly has the most teeth of anything we’ve done. There’s certainly an aggressive side, but we also have some of the most emotional sides of us. We’ve become vulnerable. Our entire lives changed over the last two years. We asked a lot of questions about ourselves, so this album, each song is kind of a story. There were changing relationships, changing perspectives, so each song is intensely personal, and we can’t wait to share the story of that journey.”
The album title, Pioneer, comes from a song that was pivotal to the band, according to Neil Perry: “Probably our collective favorite song, Pioneer, almost became a lifeline for us, because it talks about ‘Where are we going? I don’t know but still we have to go.’ After ‘If I Die Young,’ we were wondering what the next step was gonna be, so it was interesting, the songs we had written had been our coach and lifeline to get to where we are now.”
Kimberly adds, “We’ve probably re-written every song three times, but the thing we know for sure is the album we’re putting out is what we needed to say next. It’s really cool to stand on the process, and this is The Band Perry Version 2.0.”

One of the steps in the process was working with legendary producer Rick Rubin, famous for his work with Johnny Cash. Kimberly told Lon that the time they spent with Rick was an important part of the journey: “We took our songs to him, and he honed the songwriting process with us. Then we looked at each other and said ‘We need to take these songs back home to Nashville,’ so Dann Huff ended up producing the project. It wasn’t the original plan, but that’s the story of life, sometimes you end up in a different place than you began. That’s why I’m so proud of this album, because it is the story of uncertainty, plowing through weeds and rocky terrain, to find your way.” And Neil said, “That’s why the song Pioneer was so personal. ‘What will become of us? I don’t care, I’ll go anywhere,’ and that is really the story of this record.”
The Band Perry’s second album, “Pioneer,” will be released on April 2nd. One other hint about the album came from Kimberly: “The number 2 has become very important to us, with “Better Dig Two,” on our second album, released on April 2nd, so it’s kind of a burgeoning thing from this album as well.”
