Luke Breaks News To Aldean
The lead-off performance on the annual CMA Awards show carries a lot of prestige. Every artist wants that opening slot. So when the decision was made that Jason Aldean would kick off the show with buddies Luke Bryan and Eric Church, Luke was obviously very excited. He told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton he immediately called Aldean: “I called Jason, and said, ‘Whassup! We did it, we did it! We’re opening the awards!” And he’s like, ‘What are you talking about?’ The message hadn’t gotten to him yet. So I kinda spilled the beans to Jason.” Lon asked him, so did you call Eric? “I never got to Eric. After my blunder with Jason I decided to let the proper channels tell everybody.”

The real challenge came when the three of them rehearsed the performance, because they’d never done the song together before. In fact, Luke told Lon the first time he knew his parts in the song was when the record was released: “The day the album came out, I bought the album so I could hear The Only Way I Know so I could start getting it together for the awards. And I kinda flubbed it a little on the show, I missed my very last line, and Jason and Eric were grinnin’ at me and laughing, so I told everybody if my harmonies sound bad, just tell me to shut up.”
