Love & Theft React To Taylor Swift
Four years ago, Love & Theft did a concert tour with Taylor Swift. At the time, she was writing songs for her “Fearless” album. Taylor was apparently inspired by the band’s Stephen Barker Liles to write a song, and she titled it “Hey Stephen.” Taylor talked about the song when she co-hosted the Countdown in 2008: “When he was on tour with me, I though he was so cute. I never told him I liked him, so I wrote this song, and I played this for my label, and they said, ‘You have to put this on the record.’ So the night the record came out, I sent Stephen a text that said, ‘Track 5.'”
Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton played that story for Stephen and got his reaction: “I never heard that before, actually, that was fun. When she called me, she’s like ‘I just wrote this song about you.’ But she didn’t say if it was good or bad, and I thought, did I do something on tour. It’s the nicest thing any girl has done for me. To put my name in it, and let everyone know she wrote it about me, and it’s a great song, and she’s super talented.”
How long between the time she told you about the song and you heard it? “We went with her the night the album came out to Wal Mart and got the album, and I listened to it on the way home.”
Wouldn’t it have been the time to listen to it with her? You could have listened to it in her car? Stephen’s band-mate Eric pointed out: “Her parent’s car was sitting right out front! It could have happened! Andrea’s driving and Stephen & Taylor are sitting in the back seat. That would have been really cute.”
