Martina McBride’s Ride With Strait
Martina McBride spent the first two months of 2012 on the road with George Strait. The tour ended Saturday night in Kansas City. When she co-hosted Country Countdown USA, she told Lon Helton about the night he became a grandfather: “Norma his wife told me the weekend before they were anxiously awaiting their first grandchild. She was so excited, then they had the baby, and George had pictures on his phone, which I got to see, so cute!”

What’s the atmosphere like backstage? “It’s really relaxed, it’s laid back, I don’t see George much during the day, he keeps to himself during the day. Then he does his show and we all go out and watch, because it’s amazing, he sounds so good, singe all those great songs. And I have been able to hang out with him backstage after the show, and he’s warm and fun and funny, he’s a good guy.”

He does the show “in the round.” What’s that like for you? It’s cool, it’s interesting, it took me the first few shows to figure it out. Once you get a rhythm down, it’s easier now.
Do you like it? Yes, I do like it. It’s different in the round. Of course I like being on the tour. The whole in the round thing is a different way of doing it. I think I’m getting the hang of it. The audience seeing the back of me was not something I did not consider…otherwise I would have done more squats before the tour started, more workin’ out.
Does it change your wardrobe? Not really. They’ve got video screens, and there’s not a bad seat when they do it that way.
