Chesney Drunk Dials Lionel Richie
Kenny Chesney is part of Lionel Richie’s all-star country duets album, “Tuskegee.” The song Kenny sings is “My Love,” originally a 4-week #1 from 1983. But that’s not why Kenny chose the song for the project. He told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “I just remembered loving that song as a kid. I wasn’t sure I was going to do that project, because it had to be the right song. When he asked me to do this, I felt there was one song that I loved the melody of it, it was a song I could make my own, and it could be authentic and not seemed forced, because I loved it. I’m glad I did it. My mom happened to be in town the day we did it, and I asked Lionel if mom could come to the studio. He was so nice to them, it was a great moment for them, and he was a great guy, and I love him even more because he was good to mama.”

We have since spoken with Lionel Richie about his duet with Kenny, and he told us something that Kenny left out: “I got a voicemail from Kenny that goes, ‘Lionel, oh my God, ‘My Love,’ I love you. I love you.’ And I realized Kenny Chesney loved ‘My Love.’ The next day he called me back, and said, ‘I’m sorry Lionel, but I drunk dialed you. But I had to tell you how much I love you.’ By the way, if anythone tells me I’m lying, I actually have the drunk dial tape! I almost put it on the Deluxe version of this album, but that’ll be for the future.”
